astral plain

This sculpture intends to cause the viewer to engage with their own concept of recycling and appreciate the aesthetic qualities of such an abject and ignoble medium as discarded aluminium drink cans. Despite being crumpled, filthy, smelly objects, they are a source of extraordinary colour, light reflection and even produce a unique sound as they chime in the wind. I wanted to create the illusion of a uniform mass of gleaming metal hovering just above the ground – elevated not only physically, but spiritually, by evoking a mystical presence. With this work, I have extended the cans’ life just a little longer, before they inevitably
re-enter the recycle loop.
