portrait of dorrit black

This piece is a response to my relationship with the environment of the new Dorrit Black building at the South Australian School of Art.

Also in the brief was the requirement to use only (and all of) a supplied cardboard packing carton plus some supplementary material, if required.

In keeping with the design of the actual building, the footprint is smaller than the overall floorplan, giving an visual overhang. The ends are faced with alternating materials - metal foil and cowhide - with a circular section of the obverse material in each case. This represents the marriage of inorganic (the cold, hard architecture of the structure) and organic (the human element of the transient habitation of the building) aspects.

The alternating materials facing the ends imply an engagement between these two aspects occurring within the realm of the structure.

The remnant offcuts bundled to the side relate to the ongoing construction peripheral to the main building.
